Trip to Traditional Islam Crafts School IV: Finished Window Screen

This was a finished window screen. Veiling has powerful resonance in the Islamic tradition which makes much use of the interplay of light and obscuration. The word for disbelief, 'kufr', for example, means "to cover over" because to disbelieve is to cover over the truth. This is different from the word 'faith' which derives from the Latin word 'fides' meaning 'to trust.' To see the truth one simply needs to remove the veils blocking the light that has always been there.
